Poliomyelitis often called Polio is an acute viral infection that is spread from person to person. It refers to inflammation of the spinal cords grey matter. Some cases of polio result in the virus entering the central nervous system.
Post polio is a result of the initial polio virus, typically showing signs later on in life for previous Polio patients. The severity of Post polio is not always based on the initial polio outcome. Typically post polio syndrome will continue to increase into a form of post polio muscle atrophy. PPMA shows several similarities to that of Multiple Sclerosis. Typical common signs between these two muscular diseases are known to cause deterioration of the muscles and the ability to use the muscles. Because of the muscle disability in most patients, this will often lead to other orthopedic, neurological and respiratory issues.
